Customs in the Netherlands intercepts containers full of counterfeit goods every day. RTL News talks to customs and counterfeit fighter ‘John’ about the detection and consequences of counterfeit in the Netherlands. 

RTL Nieuws reported that the FIOD seized 10,000 pairs of fake Nikes in warehouses in Alphen aan den Rijn last week. The trade in fake clothing is a billion-dollar business, representing more than €500 billion annually worldwide and damaging the Dutch economy by almost €2 billion.

Customs and counterfeit goods

Customs has its hands full every day with containers full of fake products, 80 per cent of which come from China. Only large consignments or trade stocks are tackled, such as suitcases full of fake clothes.

Private investigators in action

Private investigator John, who works for major clothing brands, played an important role in the recent find. ‘I immediately see what is fake,’ he told RTL. Thanks to his work, the fake Nikes were tracked down and taken out of circulation.
